Public Safety

I’ve always believed that a neighborhood can’t grow unless its residents feel safe.
Public safety is the number one issue facing our city and I remain committed to finding innovative ways to protect our homes and our loved ones.

It’s this belief that made me join with the Firefighters’ Union and local residents to lead the successful crusade to keep all of the City’s fire companies open and to expand the City’s emergency medical services.

It’s why I helped craft a budget compromise that led to the funding of new police officers in the most recent budget cycle. It’s why I was the first District Councilperson to bring community groups, the State police, the District Attorney and other local enforcement agencies together to create neighborhood Nuisance Bar Taskforces that have led to the closure of dozens of problem establishments, a model that has been copied city-wide.
It’s why I work with civic leaders and state and local agencies to prepare for events like Mardis Gras and the Greek Picnic, which we have successfully made non-events.

And it’s why I joined Senator Fumo, the Attorney General, the District Attorney, Police Commissioner Johnson, among other elected officials in announcing a multi-agency taskforce to tackle the problem of illegal guns.

I’ll continue working with civic leaders, residents and law enforcement officials in all of these efforts. Whether its improving communication between neighbors and the police, participating in the Police Advisory Council, or working to maintain and expand our public safety departments, I am committed to protecting our neighborhoods.
